"Anaesthesiologists play a significant role in the management of cardiac surgical patients during the various stages of Cardiopulmonary Bypass," Steven Bartels and Kathirvel Subramaniam emphasize in the new textbook "Extracorporeal Circulation". "Anesthesie drug administration and maintenance, hemodynamic management, coagulation management, monitoring and prevention of complications and disasters, neuroprotection, and prevention of endorgan injury are important aims of anesthesia management during Cardiopulmonary Bypass. Across Europe, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is causing excess deaths, placing a burden on societies and health systems, and harming the economy. Yet, European governments still have to develop a common vision to guide the management of the pandemic. Overwhelming evidence shows that not only public health, but also society and the economy benefit greatly from low COVID-19 case numbers. Vaccines will help control the virus, but not until late 2021. If we do not act now, further waves of infection are to be expected, with consequential further damage to health, society, jobs and businesses. Given open borders within Europe, a single country alone cannot keep the number of COVID-19 cases low; thus joint action and common goals among countries are essential. We, therefore, call for a strong, coordinated European response and clearly defined medium- and long-term goals.

2020 has been a difficult year for all, but has seen 58 vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) be developed and in clinical trials, with some vaccines reportedly having more than 90% efficacy against COVID-19 in clinical trials. This remarkable achievement is much-needed good news as COVID-19 cases are currently at their highest daily levels globally.

Almost every human population has moved at some point.

Human beings tend to be fascinated with their beginnings. Origin stories are found across cultures, religions, ethnicities and nationalities — and they are all deeply important. These stories tell people where they come from, how they fit in and how everyone fits together.

Throughout the course of history the entire Danube region has time and time again witnessed dramatic shifts in migration of large populations. The lack of knowledge regarding these extremely varied circumstances can also be a stumbling block to the political and socio-economic integration of the Danube countries into the EU. We Western Europeans have forgotten to research in this open air laboratory and therefor fail to understand the problems in former Yugoslavia. A multidisciplinary anthology intends to improve the understanding of history, the current development and the perspectives of the Danube countries in relation to the European integration process: "Migration, Integration and Health"

The current migration and asylum policies of the Federal Republic of Germany and the EU seriously violate the right to health and the physical and psychological integrity of migrant and refugee peoples. This is the result of the Human Rights Tribunal organized by an alliance of civil society organizations in Berlin at the weekend.

“The reports of fugitives and their supporters paint a frightening picture of German and European migration policy” summarized juror Sarah Lincoln. “Many of the refugees are sick and need special protection. Instead, they are treated like second-class citizens, without privacy, without access to adequate health care, without procedural rights”.

One of the many dangers of COVID-19 is the disease's mysterious ability to promote blood clots throughout the body. Now, a new study may explain why — the disease appears to spur the production of special antibodies known to trigger blood clots. These so-called "autoimmune antibodies" or "autoantibodies" attack a person's own tissues. Specific types of autoantibodies called "antiphospholipid autoantibodies" attack cells in such a way as to promote blood clots. In the study, published Nov. 2 in the journal Science Translational Medicine, researchers detected these autoantibodies in about half of patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

In The Lancet, Brian Ward and colleagues report two efficacy studies that are, to the best of my knowledge, the first randomised phase 3 trials of a plant-derived quadrivalent influenza vaccine.[1] The vaccine material was generated in Nicotiana benthamiana, a relative of the tobacco plant. The plants were transfected with an attenuated plant viral vector (Agrobacterium tumefaciens) expressing influenza haemagglutinin genes and the vaccine was recovered from the transfected plants in the form of virus-like particles.
