Hygiene Guidelines: How to avoid infections in Dialysis Units

During the COVID-19-Pandemic, the hygiene requirements are increasing. COVID-19-dialysis-patients are to be separated similarly to those infected with MRSA. The Guideline for Applied Hygiene in Dialysis Units offers a comprehensive, detailed, scientifically sound concept.

Guidelines for Applied Hygiene in Dialysis Units

"As staff normally moves between the MRSA room and the other sections of treatment, high requirements for the observance of the hygiene measures have to be made:

    • When entering the treatment room, staff has to put on protective aprons, mouth/nose protection as well as disposable examination gloves.
    • Bed with mattress (recommended to be fluid-proof, protective cover with disinfectable surface), floor, horizontal surfaces and dialysis machines have to undergo a scrub/wet disinfection between the treatments.
    • Devices like sthetoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, tourniquet and all other nursing tools shall be assigned exclusively to the MRSA/MRE patients and shall likewise be disinfected after every treatment.
    • Reusable crockery can be used if the used crockery can be brought to the disinfecting dishwasher (validated procedure) in a transport container which can be disinfected both inside and outside. If this is not possible, then disposable crockery shall be used.
    • Sterile goods and dressing material are to be prepared patient-related.
    • The gloves as well as the mouth/nose protection shall be put in the waste bag before leaving the treatment room.
    • The protective overall has to be taken off and kept in the treatment anteroom before leaving the treatment unit.
    • A hygienic disinfection of the hands has to be done after this.
    • The protective overall has to be put in a tightly sealable laundry bag - also using the double bag method - at the end of the shift at the latest. In case of disposable overalls, a tightly sealable laundry bag shall be used also applying the double bag method.
    • After every dialysis, blankets, pillows and their covers have to be disinfected and reprocessed just like in normal hospital laundry. The dirty linen has to be collected in a tightly sealable laundry bag and sent sealed to the laundry also using the double bag method. Devices may only leave the isolation unit after preliminary disinfection.
    • Waste is collected in the treatment unit and as long as no other factors have to be respected, it is sealed also using the double bag method and then put into the domestic rubbish.
    • The treatment unit has to be clearly marked as such."
